Another common question we get from our clients when they are deciding what type of retaining wall block system to use. One of our most commonly recommended blocks are Redi Rock – but an important consideration to have before using Redi Rock is their massive weights! Read on below for outline of how much the most commons blocks weigh.
First resource you can check out, and very detailed (probably too detailed if you just want to know the general weights and sizes of the blocks) is the Redi Rock Block Library. It is a comprehensive document available from Redi Rock showing block weights, dimensions, etc.
Although the block library is very useful for us engineers who are familiar with Redi Rock, for people who aren’t it can be difficult to find information due to the huge amount of blocks available in the Redi Rock System. With that in mind I will highlight the most commonly used blocks and their weights in this article.
Block Sizes
Ignoring specialty blocks, Redi Rock blocks come in three sizes, as listed below:
- 28″
- 41″
- 60″
These dimensions measure the DEPTH of the blocks, that is – the distance from the face of the block (the side you would see once the wall has been built) to the back of the block. The block weights are provided as a range based on the facing texture you choose. In general Cobblestone/Limestone are heavier and Kingstone/Ledgestone are lighter.
28″ Redi Rock Block Weights
28″ blocks are the smallest and lightest Redi Rock blocks. These are typical in small residential walls.
Block Type | Block Weight | Block Weight |
28″ Top Block | 530 kg – 557 kg | 1160 lbs – 1230 lbs |
28″ Middle Block | 700 kg – 730 kg | 1540 lbs – 1610 lbs |
28″ Bottom Block | 760 kg – 790 kg | 1670 lbs – 1740 lbs |
41″ Redi Rock Block Weights
Block Type | Block Weight (kg) | Block Weight (lbs) |
41″ Top Block | 760 kg – 790 kg | 1680 lbs – 1750 lbs |
41″ Middle Block | 1020 kg – 1050 kg | 2240 lbs – 2310 lbs |
41″ Bottom Block | 1070 kg – 1110 kg | 2370 lbs – 2440 lbs |
60″ Redi Rock Block Weights
Block Type | Block Weight (kg) | Block Weight (lbs) |
60″ Middle Block | 1460 kg – 1490 kg | 3220 lbs – 3290 lbs |
60″ Bottom Block | 1520 kg – 1550 kg | 3350 lbs – 3420 lbs |
Freestanding Block Weights
The next most common block type is the freestanding series. See below for their weights, generally similar to the 28″ series.
Block Type | Block Weight (kg) | Block Weight (lbs) |
Freestanding Top | 560 kg – 620 kg | 1230 lbs – 1380 lbs |
Garden Top | 410 kg – 480 kg | 910 lbs – 1050 lbs |
Freestanding Middle | 570 kg – 640 kg | 1260 lbs – 1410 lbs |
Freestanding Bottom | 630 kg – 690 kg | 1380 lbs – 1520 lbs |
Summary
As you can see, these blocks are quite heavy and do require construction equipment to work with them. If you’re looking to build a retaining wall on your own as a little DIY project, you may want to choose a different wall system such as Allan Block.
