Recommended Gravel Driveway Construction Products
In our drawings package and accompanying How-To article, we recommended the following products based on our experience in construction and design. If the items listed below aren’t available in your country, we’ve selected the best options in your region.
Recommended Geotextiles
Super Geotextile
Super Geotextile is an American company out of Wisconsin that has a lot of options in both geotextile thickness and roll sizes. This is an actual geotextile filter fabric, and is NOT landscape fabric (landscape fabric should not be used for construction as it will easily rip). The 6 oz thickness is likely suitable for your project, depending on the size of vehicles being driven on your driveway.
Recommended Two Way Geogrids (AKA Biaxial)
Bi-Directional Geogrid
Although the product page here mentions retaining walls, a biaxial geogrid can function as soil reinforcement as well. Make sure you don’t get the uniaxial geogrid though, as that will not effectively reinforce your driveway.
If you feel like getting another type of grid, contact a local supplier and ask for Miragrid BXG110. It will be more expensive, but you should feel more confident with it.
Basecore Geocells
Geocells aren’t exactly the same as geogrid, but they work in much the same way (in fact they are actually more effective). Installation isn’t as easy, and you’ll definitely need staples to install this properly. Note that if you decide to use geocells you won’t need to overlap the geocells as you would with geogrid.
Other Ground Reinforcement Options
Truegrid Permeable Pavers
This product is installed on the surface of the your driveway and filled with the 20 mm crushed gravel, instead of being installed in the base of the driveway like other options. The rest of the driveway should be built the same. These are also a great option.
Recommended Tools
Pinnacle Mercantile Landscape Staples
Really any galvanized landscape staples will do. North American made, so these get our vote.
Construction Twine
Nylon twine. Useful for marking out the footprint of your driveway before you start excavating. Just put stakes around the outside of where you want to build the driveway and connect them with the twine. Along with stakes, very useful for accurately estimating quantities.
Stakes
Use these to mark out your driveway footprint. Careful planning will save you money by not over-ordering expensive gravel down the line.
Fabric Scissors
You’ll need fabric scissors to cut the geotextile filter fabric.
